Check Which UK Energy Grants You Qualify For

Updated March 2026

If you own a home in England or Wales, there is a good chance you qualify for government funding to improve your heating or insulation. But working out which scheme applies to you is not straightforward. The Great British Insulation Scheme closed to new applicants in 2025 and ends entirely on 31 March 2026. Other schemes are still running, and a major new one is now open.

This calculator checks your situation against the three active energy efficiency schemes and tells you what you may be eligible for. It takes about two minutes, and you will get your results straight away.

What Is Happening with Energy Grants in 2026?

The Great British Insulation Scheme Has Closed

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) closed to new applications in late 2025 and the scheme ends on 31 March 2026. No new referrals are being accepted. Over 90,000 households received insulation through the scheme during its lifetime.

What Has Replaced It?

Two government-backed schemes are still open and accepting applications.

Warm Homes: Local Grantis the main programme for lower-income households in England. It is delivered through local authorities and can provide up to £30,000 per household – split across two funding pots of up to £15,000 for insulation and energy efficiency measures, and up to £15,000 for low-carbon heating. Eligibility depends on household income, benefits status, property EPC rating, and your local authority area.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides £7,500 towards replacing a fossil fuel heating system with an air source or ground source heat pump. There are no income requirements. The scheme is open to property owners in England and Wales whose current heating runs on gas, oil, or LPG. The grant is paid directly to your MCS-certified installer.

From April 2025, BUS was expanded to include air-to-air heat pumps (eligible for a £2,500 grant) and heat batteries (also £2,500). Heat pumps installed alongside solar panels also qualify, provided the property meets the scheme's requirements.

Both schemes also benefit from reduced VAT: energy-saving materials and heat pump installations are charged at 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

What About ECO4?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme has been extended to 31 December 2026. It is delivered by energy suppliers and funds similar measures to the Warm Homes: Local Grant – insulation, heating upgrades, and renewable installations – but is aimed at fuel-poor households. The extension is focused on completing existing supplier obligations, so availability may be more limited than earlier in the scheme. If you receive certain means-tested benefits and live in a property with an EPC of D or below, contact your energy supplier to check whether support is still available. ECO4 and the Warm Homes: Local Grant operate alongside each other, so it is worth checking both.

Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland

The Warm Homes: Local Grant applies to England only. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales. Scotland has its own programme, Home Energy Scotland, which offers grants and interest-free loans for energy efficiency improvements. Wales has the Nest scheme for low-income households. Northern Ireland runs the Affordable Warmth Scheme. Our calculator flags which schemes are available in your region based on your postcode.

What to Do Next

Use the calculator above to check which schemes apply to your situation. If you are likely eligible, follow the links in your results to apply directly through the official channels. For the Warm Homes: Local Grant, this means contacting your local authority. For BUS, you will need an MCS-certified installer who can apply on your behalf.
